A long time contributor, a sonic curator, and musical journey vanguard, Cole Pierce, returns to Headphone Commute’s podcast series with his latest auditory map – LAKE ODESSA. This latest installment is more than a mix – it is an extension to Pierce’s sound installation for the Born Digital Exhibition at CAM Raleigh, which is opening today (January, 28th, 2012).

“My piece in the Born Digital Exhibition is a listening station and a limited edition run of hand-made mix CDs. There is a vague theme running throughout the music mix about obscured language and limits of human behavior. The mix is fairly drawn out, comprised of austere ambient and abstract electronic music, with a groovy set in the middle. I wove a variety of found sounds and field recordings throughout the mix; Buzz Aldrin on the moon, snippets of conversations about phobias, artificial christmas trees, and Brian Eno’s ideas on limit making.”

Full of incredible ambient soundscapes and modern classical marvels, Jedlicka crafts an itinerary worthy of repeat revisits and appropriate for another end of year celebration. Besides being a programming director at Portland Radio Authority where Jedlicka runs the Optic Echo Presents show, Mike also curates his label, Optic Echo Records, with an upcoming vinyl release by Marcus Fischer.

My good friend and accomplice in exploration of beautiful music, Peter van Cooten, returns to Headphone Commute to showcase some of his favorite selections from 2011. And what a great way to start off the year! Here is an introduction from Peter:

This mix obviously found its name from the lovely intro (and outtro) track by Nest.

In-between, there are many moments of ‘stillness’, too… Moments you may slowly drift off into the drones, letting your mind wander… to be pulled back again by some of the post-classical ‘anchors’ in this mix from A Winged Victory For the Sullen, Human Greed, Vladimír Gódar, and Maya Beiser (member of Bang on a Can, with a stunning cello performance of the Djivan Gasparyan composition ‘Memories’).

Most of the tracks featured in this collection were released in 2011. But this mix is not intended to be a “Best of…” overview. That would result in a selection with an entirely different atmosphere (and much longer, because one hour would not be enough to cover all the great releases I have enjoyed in 2011).

Perhaps there’s no better way to start off a new year than to offer a small opportunity to retreat from current society’s turmoil, and to find some time to ‘cocoon’ to the sounds (and the sometimes fascinating depths) of ‘Stillness’. Some word of warning, however: if the title suggests that this mix only contains warm, comfortable and pleasurable sounds, be prepared for some surprises.

I never said that “Stillness” always meant “Comforting”…

Today we welcome back Cole Pierce for his fourth podcast on Headphone Commute to tickle our ears with is unique selection of obscure sounds that would otherwise have escaped us. Cole’s mixes are always more than just a collection of tracks – it’s a whole story wrapped in an enigma only as mysterious as its creator. WORD starts out rather dense, then chills out in the second half. Wildly eclectic with seamless continuity; WORD is mix of new wave, kosmische, IDM, R&B, dubstep, experimental pop, roots reggae, ambient, movie samples, found sound, and field recordings.    Two cloudy discs, a pair of Saturns. Each with rings. And a third sit of rings, wispy and ill defined, circled the entire system. “They are approximately 3 million kilometers from each other. Quite close. Especially for objects of this size.”
   The room had become very quiet.
   A cloud floated midway between the worlds, at the center of mass. It was enormous, big enough to envelop either of the giants. Lightning bolts rippled through it. It looked like a third planet. Broad bands of clouds lined both worlds, autumn – hued on one, blue and silver on the other.
   ”I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Hutch, breaking the long silence.
   Ice tinkled in someone’s drink.

WORD was originally produced in a unique edition of 80 CDs, linoleum print on 90 lb cotton paper handmade cases, and distributed during ASCII in April of 2011. Cole has an upcoming show with Rusty Shackleford at Hinge Gallery in Chicago on November 5th, where he will be showing a new series of paintings.

On today’s Headphone Commute Podcast we feature a very special mix from one of the performing artists at Seattle’s Decibel Festival, teasing you with a preview of things to come. The festival is only a few weeks away, but the party has already started! On this mix, Ctrl_Alt_Dlt showcases his favorite latest tunes, delivering a smooth hour-long exploration into some abstract tech-house and experimental beats. During the festival, Ctrl_Alt_Dlt will be hosting a very special Sweatbox Showcase along side Camea and Tim Xavier. But for now, here’s your preview for one of the most anticipating events of 2011 (at least on my calendar!)

Ctrl_Alt_Dlt is a Seattle based DJ originally hailing from the tame streets of suburban Detroit. “I went to my first party in 1999 and have had this insatiable appetite for techno music ever since, I just can’t get enough.” Strongly influenced by the sounds coming out of the Motor City, Ctrl_Alt_Dlt has taken the genre of techno and made it his own. His sets are rooted in the minimal sound with an emphasis on the more abstract side of things, while also fully incorporating all elements of techno and house creating a set full of highs and lows, never giving away too much at a time. “I like to find tracks that have the wierdest most abstract noises possible. Exposing people’s minds to sounds and textures they have never heard before is my ultimate goal.” In addition to residencies around the city Ctrl_Alt_Dlt is also a founding member of Sweatbox, a strictly techno based productions group who continue to bring the late night underground flavor to the city.
